The Best Inventions

I didn't realize how genius these inventions were until right now. I have spent many nights sleeping in the recliner with Caleb because he won't sleep on his own (or because I fall asleep while nursing or burping him). The swing keeps him quiet almost as well as holding him in my arms does.
How did those pioneers get along without these fancy things?

I've been thinking all day that some clever pioneers must have had their own version of the Swing-o-matic; perhaps powered by older siblings, or even wind-powered. Perhaps the dreadful, "rock-a-bye-baby, in the tree tops, when the the wind blows, the cradle will rock" was an early swing-o-matic.
And while Lazyboy will not admit it, recliners have been around for a while, too. I'll bet pioneer mothers sometimes used hammocks.

I've often wondered if "Rock a bye baby" wasn't more of a threat to baby than a lullaby.

Oh the wonderful swing. Ours is so well used it sounds more like someone dragging a chain down the stairs one...rhythmic...step...at...a...time.
