What to wear

It's going to be a big day today. I've polished my shoes. I'm looking sharp.
These pants are a big saggy though. I'll get a belt. Always match your belt to your shoes.
On second thought, maybe this belt would be better. Oh, what to do, what to do.

Spilled Milk

That last post should have been long enough to satisfy my blogginess for at least a couple of days, but I just had to put this picture up. You guessed it, this is what she was up to while I was composing that last lengthy post.Even worse, I gave her a bath just three hours ago. So I attempted to wipe her off with baby wipes (sort of a baby wipe sponge bath) but while we were there on the changing table she decided to just pee everywhere. Sorry if you didn't want to know that.
Doesn't she just look so joyful in that picture? I wonder if my taking pictures every time she does something bad/messy is interfering with her figuring out that it's not good behavior.

PB & J

This post started out as a simple message about Emily's first peanut butter and jam sandwich.
She really liked it. It ended up really messy, but I prefer to remember it as shown in these pictures.
After uploading those two pictures I found all these other great pictures and couldn't help but add a few. So reader beware: the rest of this post will be disorganized and completely disconnected. One day, a couple of weeks ago I fell asleep on the floor. I've been sounding so lazy in these last couple of posts, and I am going to fall back on the old pregnant excuse. I was tired because I am making a little baby boy right now inside me. Anyway, when I woke up, I found Emily on the table, having demolished an entire nectarine. She was pretty proud of herself and I was pretty sad. Off to the bath!

Emily has recently taken a greater interest in shoes. She loves wearing shoes, especially other people's. Above she's posing in some lovely leather sandals and below she is wearing some very nice Asics running shoes.

As most of you probably know, last weekend was General Conference. A family in student housing was thoughtful enough to organize a potluck lunch between sessions on Saturday and we had a great turnout. The LDS population in student housing is surprisingly large. Emily had lots of friends her age to play with, though she seemed to prefer tagging along with the older kids. She tried to join in a frisbee game, but she may have been out of her league there. The adults would throw her the frisbee and she'd run to pick it up off the ground and then bring it back to whoever threw it. What a good little teammate!I don't think she ever just sat in the shade - she even had her food on the go. I guess that explains why she is so much darker than either of her parents. In the picture above I'd finally coaxed her to take a two minute break before she was up and off again.

Speaking of eating on the go, sometimes Emily gets too impatient to wait for dinner so I give her something special instead. Below is a typical Emily dinner on the floor (because she's Japanese) with some of her favorite dishes: pretzel goldfish with cheese sticks and grapes. Good thing her mom is such a good cook and can handle that kind of thing!
And I don't know if this is the best picture to end on (she's not looking her best), but here is Emily showing off a set of double Swedish Chefs and her double chin! What a flattering picture of our darling baby.

Assorted Tidbits

Today I was sitting on the couch reading a book I turned around and found Emily being so happy. I'm not sure how she managed to get up onto the seat without it tipping over, but she sure was proud of herself! We'll have to start her on lessons soon.

Earlier today as I was sitting outside watching Emily play, one of the three-year-olds out there came up to me and said, "Are you Emily's grandma or just her regular parent?"
I have to say, I've never been asked that before. It may be time to start buying and using this stuff. And right now, as I am sitting here typing, I have noticed that the waistband of my jeans is uncomfortably tight. I may have to put these ones away and break out the stylish elastic pants to wear for the next couple of months. (I don't remember having to switch over so early last time - 19 weeks! Yikes!)

One last comment before I close. You may have noticed that each of these paragraphs began with a statement describing how I was sitting and not being active. I promise, I have not been sitting all day. Emily and I even went out for a nice jog/walk this morning.

Impressions

For a graphics assignment, we were instructed to make an impressionist version of a photograph (we also wrote the program that does the rendering). I don't have to turn it in until Monday. Which do you prefer?

Edit: I added this one a bit later

Birthday Pictures!

Here are the long awaited pictures from my birthday! :)
In the morning, Joseph asked me if I wanted to open presents right away or wait until we got to Jared and Sue's house that afternoon. (Joseph's brother and sister-in-law who live in San Antonio.) I said I wanted them right at that very moment, so he brought out my cute stack of presents.

Here is a shot of how excited I was to open them. Too bad I didn't do my hair before deciding to do this. I got a whole bunch of thoughtful little gifts from Joseph like a new journal, some DVD's I love, an SD card for my phone and a couple of other things.
After church we drove for almost two hours to get to Jared and Suzie's house for me and Suzie's double birthday celebration. It sounds like a long drive, but it's not really that bad. Especially compared to the drive to Utah. We're so happy we have relatives nearby! Here's a picture from right when we got there. Emily loves balloons. She helped Derek dump a whole bunch of them over the little gate into the kitchen so the dog could play too.

After a delicious dinner made by Suzie we had birthday pie and brownie. Here Suzie and Pam and Derek are trying to blow out her candles. Me and Em took care of mine pretty quick. The brownies don't look like they have a 23 on them, but the two is made out of little candles and the three is standing up.

And here I am opening my cute present from Jared and Suzie. It was a little pink pre-made scrapbook for Emily. Suzie put together all the pages and all I have to do is stick my pictures in! I hope I can handle that, because I for sure can't handle real scrapbooking.
I have to say that 23 is a great old age to be, but I think senility (or dementia) is beginning to set in early. The other day I made pancakes while Joseph was gone and when he got home I said to him, "I hope you're able to find the baking powder because I sure have no idea where it is." And he said, "didn't you use it today?" and I had but I still had no idea where it was. Joseph found it in the fridge later that evening.
Today I was trying to do laundry and had made three trips up and down the apartment stairs to get the stroller and all the laundry outside but then I could not find the detergent anywhere! I called Joseph pretty angry and upset and asked him if he had put it anywhere special because I was certain I had put it away last time I'd done laundry. He had no idea and told me to buy some more because I probably left it in the laundromat last week. I was frustrated and went downstairs to start bringing things back in. But then I found the detergent out with the stroller and the laundry baskets. I swear I didn't do it though.

And back to the birthday picture post... here's a picture I just had to throw in of Emily playing Rock Band her way.

happy birthday!

Yesterday was my 23rd birthday! Yay! Here's the book Joseph gave to me. The rest I will write about tomorrow because it is way too late right now.

A New Favorite

Lately I've had something of a hankerin' for some caramel popcorn, so the other night we decided to make some! It was super delicious and easy to make. I even sent some home with my parents as a snack to eat on the plane. We just used a recipe from allrecipes dot com (cut in half):

Ingredients
1 cup butter
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 quarts (20 cups) popped popcorn

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (95 degrees C). Place popcorn in a very large bowl.

2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil without stirring 4 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in soda and vanilla. Pour in a thin stream over popcorn, stirring to coat.

3.Place in two large shallow baking dishes and bake in preheated oven, stirring every 15 minutes, for 1 hour. Remove from oven and let cool completely before breaking into pieces.

The picture above is not mine - it just looked way better than mine did.

Below is a picture of Emily sorting through some of our home storage for us. She climbed into the tote all by herself!

And here is a picture of our popcorn which, though doesn't look as appetizing as the picture above, still probably tasted way better, I bet.

Mostly just cute pictures

I haven't posted for a while but nothing has been happening and sadly, I'm not really one of those people that can make an interesting post out of nothing.
The last couple of days have been eventful though, with Grandma and Grandpa Bartlett coming into town. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of that so I will have to wait to get their pictures before I give any more details.
I did, however, get some good pictures of the new shelf we bought and put together yesterday (exciting, I know). Since I stopped working and started being a full-time stay-at-home mom, I have been trying to make our apartment a little more homey and pleasant. In other words, I have switched over from making money to spending it. But that's a whole nother issue. Anyway, here is a picture of the mostly-done shelf and our little baby putting it to some good use.
Lately, since we babysat a two-year-old girl who preferred order to chaos, Emily has been imitating her and working hard to learn how to set up her animals instead of knocking them all over after we set them up for her.
Here she just noticed the camera and gave us a proud smile.

And here I've just put the middle shelf in, which made it more difficult for Emily to play, but didn't damper her spirits one tiny bit. What a little trooper! She's a keeper, she is. Joseph says she looks like a boy in this outfit, so please notice the bow in her hair that you can see in the two top pictures.
