Two weeks ago, we hopped in the car and drove a few minutes into the foothills for our weekend adventure. We got out at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). They have a lot of infrastructure for climate science up there. A portion of the facility is open to the public with some fantastic hands-on activities.
We poked and prodded at clouds. We simulated a micro-burst. We stared at an acrylic replica of a 17 pound hailstone. We shifted the direction of gale-force winds to re-shape a sandy landscape.
I won't say that the exhibits were shocking, but we were pleasantly surprised by all the things to see and do. The kids are learning about weather and climate at home-school. It's wonderful to be able to take a field trip like this.
Outside, a few trails wind around the foothills just below the Flatirons. It was a fabulous expotition.
