There's a Hole in my Finger, Dear Liza...

Bad news. Last night I was chopping a tomato and saying, "Joseph, this knife is so great! Look how well it's chopping this..." and literally, mid-sentence, I hacked into my finger. Or rather, I sliced cleanly into my finger. No messy hacking with this knife, it really is a good one (J.A. Henckels twin gourmet, if you're interested). This gash immediately started pouring blood everywhere so I grabbed a paper towel to cover it and then held it under cold water for a while. We messily stuck a band-aid on and then scotch-taped some paper towel around to catch all the excess blood. An hour and a half later it wasn't feeling too much better so I called my friend Kim. Kim is a search and rescue girl and also has an energetic two-year-old who she patches up on a fairly regular basis. She told me to come over and she'd try to help me out. When I got there, she asked me if it was a slice or if there was a flap of skin. I hadn't examined it too closely up to that point so I carefully peeled the band-aid off and immediately put it back on. It was neither a slice nor a flapper. The tip of my finger was gone! (I sure hope the missing piece ended up being washed down the drain.) That's why it was bleeding so much and that's why it still bleeds whenever I bump the band-aid/paper towel wad/gauze wrapping that I have protecting it. It's very annoying and pretty gross. I can only handle Caleb and Emily very gingerly because I don't want to bump my finger and bleed all over them. I feel very handicapped. I just hope I'm normal enough to accompany the choir on Sunday.

Yikes! What a bummer! I hate it when I do something like that.

ouch! how much of the tip did you get? how noticeable is it?

and what did you do to fix it?

You didn't mention it, but I'm sure that posting this blog entry was tricky -- typing with a finger wrapped in a bandage is a lot more difficult than I thought until I tried it. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Hope that pain killers can knock down most of it - there are an incredible number of nerve endings in our fingers and they all ask for attention at once. I'm impressed that you have made it seem like no big deal so that we wouldn't worry. Somehow a legendary battle with the black knight comes to mind.

I think that you shouldn't play on this first Sunday - not worth the danger of infection. Could you switch with Joseph?

Oh, man, that sounds awful! I'm so sorry! What a pain, literally. I hope your finger heals quickly.

Oh wow, If Cory has to play for you he can. We will be there. Which finger was it? Cory is always expecting me to hack off my finger, now that I've read this I think I am going to be a little more careful.

Well, rebecca, I thought it was more of my finger than it was because it was bleeding so much, but now that it's under control it doesn't look so bad. To fix it, your brother Nathan made me soak it in really cold water and scraped off my blood glove and then put a new bandage on. Somehow it clotted over night and it seems okay now.
And Sunnie (is your real name a secret?), I just tried the song on our keyboard and I think I can play it without my left pinky though the octaves are a little awkward. I'm excited that you guys will be in church on Sunday. Em will be happy!
Don't worry Grandma, I'll wear a bandaid.
